Find a person in photos

How to Find a Person in Your Photos

If you have thousands of photos and need to find every one featuring a specific person, manual browsing will not scale. Face-based search does — and it runs entirely on your own computer.

The challenge

Why searching by hand breaks down

A few hundred photos, you can scroll. A few thousand, and you are guessing. Tens of thousands, and the person you are looking for might as well be invisible — buried under years of events, backups and exports.

The real problem is that photos are not organised by person. They are organised by date, folder or device — none of which answers the question: "Show me every photo of this person." Face-based search does.

Step by step

From library to results

1

Provide one reference photo

A clear, front-facing photo of the person you want to find. Name the file after them — that name carries through to results.

2

Let SnapByFace index your folders

Point it at the directories containing your photos. It reads each image, detects faces, and stores numeric embeddings locally. The process is incremental — new photos only add to the index.

3

Review every match

Results come back ranked by similarity. Each match shows a score so you can see how closely the face aligns. Export the set you need.

Why this approach works

Face-based search vs manual browsing

Scales to any library size

Whether you have 500 or 50,000 photos, the process is the same: one reference photo in, every match out. The difference is just how long the scan takes.

No tagging required

You do not need to have tagged your photos in advance. Face-based search works on the visual content of the image itself.

Privacy-preserving

Your photos are read locally and the index stays on your disk. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

Works on Windows and macOS

SnapByFace runs natively on both platforms. The face models ship inside the installer, so search works with the network unplugged.

Finding people in photos: frequently asked questions

How can I find every photo of one person?
Use face-based search: provide one reference photo of the person, then let the app scan your library. SnapByFace compares that face against every face in your photos and returns all matches.
What if my photos are not tagged or organised?
That is exactly the problem face-based search solves. It does not rely on tags, filenames or folder structure — it works directly from the visual content of each photo.
Will it work with old photos?
Yes, as long as the face is visible and reasonably clear. SnapByFace supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, WebP and HEIC/HEIF — covering most camera and phone output including older exports.
Is my photo library uploaded anywhere?
No. SnapByFace processes everything locally. The face index and embeddings stay on your own disk. There is no cloud upload step.
